Choosing a Bible Translation: Word-for-Word, Thought-for-Thought, and Parallel Reading
Many first-time Bible buyers are bewildered by translations. The differences flow mainly from translation philosophy.
Formal-equivalence (word-for-word) versions preserve the original wording and structure — think ESV, NASB, or the Chinese Union Version — best for close study. Dynamic-equivalence (thought-for-thought) versions prioritize meaning — like the NLT or Chinese Contemporary Bible — smooth for reading through.
The Chinese Union Version (1919) remains the shared spiritual language of Chinese churches — dignified, though some vocabulary has aged; newer revisions refresh the language while keeping fidelity. Burmese readers have the Judson Bible, a missionary's life-work; Thai readers the Thai Standard Version.
Strategy: one primary + one companion. Make a literal translation your main text (ideally what your church uses), and keep a dynamic one beside it — where the primary is hard, the companion unlocks it.
The BiblePro app shows translations side by side across Chinese, English, Burmese and Thai, with Greek and Hebrew tools — parallel reading at its easiest.
