Newcomers meet a wall of titles: pastor, minister, priest, elder, deacon, bishop, overseer. The words differ between traditions, but underneath there are only two or three roles.
Elders, also called pastors or overseers
In the New Testament these three words describe one role from three angles: an elder is a person of tested maturity, an overseer watches over the flock, a pastor shepherds it. Their work is teaching, guarding the doctrine, and the spiritual care of the congregation.
Most traditions have several. Many congregations use pastor for the one who preaches weekly and elder for the others, which is a practical arrangement rather than a difference in office.
Deacons
Deacons care for practical needs: money, buildings, benevolence, hospitality, the members who are struggling. The role was created so that the teaching work would not be swallowed by administration, and it is not a junior version of eldership. A congregation with strong deacons is usually one where people are quietly looked after.
Priests and bishops
Catholic, Orthodox and Anglican churches use priest for the person who leads a parish and presides at communion, and bishop for the one with oversight of many parishes. Churches in this pattern trace their leadership through an unbroken succession of bishops, which is part of what the older traditions understand the church to be.
Why the structure matters more than the words
The practical question for a visitor is not what a leader is called but whether anyone can hold that leader to account.
A congregation with several elders, financial oversight by people who are not the preacher, and a stated process for handling complaints is structurally safer than one where a single figure decides everything. That is true regardless of tradition and regardless of how good the preaching is.
It is entirely reasonable to ask a church who its leaders are, how they are chosen, and who reviews the accounts. Congregations that answer such questions easily are telling you something, and so are those that do not.
The directory shows denomination, which is a rough guide to structure. Anything more specific you should ask on the day.
