Philippians 1: Written From a Prison Cell

The letter most associated with joy was written by a man in custody, awaiting a verdict that could go either way.

He does not pretend the situation is fine. He says plainly that he is torn between two options and that departing would be better for him. What he reports instead is that his imprisonment has advanced the gospel, because the guards have heard why he is there.

This is not optimism. Optimism expects the situation to improve. Paul is describing something being accomplished through a situation that has not improved at all.
