Can a Christian Lie to Protect Someone
If telling the truth would put someone in danger, is lying still wrong?

This is one of the oldest problems in ethics, and Christians differ; say that honestly first, then look at the material. Scripture holds honesty in high regard and lists lying among what God detests. That should not be softened. But several accounts deserve notice. In Exodus, the Hebrew midwives did not kill the boys as Pharaoh ordered and gave him an untrue answer, and the text goes on to say God dealt well with them. In Joshua, Rahab hid the spies and told the pursuers something false, and two New Testament passages commend her faith and her action. These do not amount to permission for lying, but they show that Scripture itself does not treat telling the truth as a rule overriding everything else; it sits within a larger frame of responsibility, particularly protecting life. Two approaches exist in the church. One holds these are sins but the lesser evil in extreme cases, with God evident kindness indicating that protecting life was the weightier matter. The other holds that withholding information from someone intent on murder was never the kind of deception the commands forbid, since those prohibitions target false witness that harms a neighbour. Both have serious adherents. What is more worth noticing is that when this question comes up in real life, it is rarely about hiding a persecuted person; it is usually looking for justification for everyday convenience. The phrase white lie most often protects the speaker rather than anyone else. So the useful question is: who does my concealment protect? If the answer is me, this is not that problem — it is a different one.
