Do the Bible Teachings About Women Still Apply

2026-09-20

Some passages about women are used to silence people. How should these be read today?

State one thing clearly first: this is a long-standing disagreement within the church, with serious Bible-holding Christians in several positions. It is not people who believe Scripture versus people who do not, and framing it that way is itself misleading. Some principles that help. Read the whole before reading one verse. Scripture has Deborah judging Israel, Huldah as a prophet, Priscilla teaching Apollos alongside her husband, Phoebe called a servant of the church, and Paul closing letters by naming many women who worked with him. Any reading that cannot account for those accounts is not reading the whole Bible. Distinguish situational instruction from general principle. Paul wrote to particular churches about particular problems. In the same letters he writes about head coverings, about slaves, about greeting with a kiss — and the church broadly agrees those require situational understanding. If only the verses about women are lifted out as timeless absolutes, the standard is not being applied consistently. Watch the direction. Read back into their setting, most of Scripture teaching about women raises rather than lowers: in a culture where a woman could not testify and could be dismissed at will, it requires husbands to love their wives as their own bodies and says a husband does not have unilateral authority over his wife body. That was highly unusual at the time. One thing must be said in closing: whichever position a person holds, using these texts to silence someone who has been hurt is not a use these texts support. When a passage is deployed to cover harm, that is not interpretation; it is using Scripture as an instrument. There is no disagreement about that.
