这封信在快结束时说明了自己的目的：我将这些话写给你们信奉神儿子之名的人，要叫你们知道自己有永生。
不是「盼望」。不是「感觉」。是「知道」。
约翰用了五章给出这个「知道」的依据，而它们都不是感觉：你信耶稣是谁；你爱不爱弟兄姊妹；你守不守他的命令。
