There is no single origin. From the later 20th century onwards, especially in North America and in Chinese-speaking communities, many congregations chose not to join any denomination — some to avoid denominational disputes, others having grown out of Bible studies or house gatherings.

Two reasons: many genuinely belong to no denomination, and public map data often leaves the field blank. A missing label says nothing about the church itself.
Are independent churches trustworthy?
As with denominational churches, they vary. The difference is accountability: a denomination provides an outside body, while an independent church depends entirely on itself. Visit, read its statement of faith, and talk to long-standing members.
