People hurt in churches often carry it alone, partly because the place they would normally take pain is the place that caused it.
Two things are worth saying at the start. It happens, in every kind of congregation. And being wounded by Christians is not the same as being wrong about Christ, though it makes the second very hard to feel.
Name what actually happened
The word covers very different things, and the response should differ.
Disappointment: you needed care and it did not arrive, often because nobody knew. Conflict: a real disagreement handled badly on one or both sides. Failure of leadership: a decision that damaged you, or a complaint dismissed. Abuse: spiritual control, financial exploitation, sexual or physical harm.
The first three are painful. The fourth is a different category and needs different action.
If it was abuse
Tell someone outside the congregation. This is the single most important step, because abusive situations survive on isolation and on internal handling.
Where a crime may have occurred, report it to the authorities. No church has the standing to be the sole judge of that, and any leader who asks you to keep it internal has told you where their concern lies.
Get support that is not connected to the group. Take your time before deciding anything about faith itself.
If it was one of the first three
Say it to the person, once, plainly. A surprising proportion of church hurt is a misunderstanding that neither side ever checked, and it survives for years because both assumed.
If that fails or feels unsafe, take it to a leader. If the church has no process for this, that is itself a finding.
On recovery
You may need distance for a while, and that is legitimate. What tends to go badly is distance without any connection at all — isolation confirms the injury and leaves you alone with the account of it that hurts most.
Keep one or two believers close even if you cannot face a congregation yet. Keep reading. And notice that the Bible itself is full of failing communities: the letters to Corinth exist because the church there was a mess.
On returning
Go somewhere new rather than testing whether you can bear the old place. Tell one leader early and plainly what happened, so you are cared for rather than assessed. Go slowly, and do not take on a role for a while.
You are allowed to be careful. Trusting again is not the entry fee. The directory is a place to look quietly, and the prayer wall is there if you want people praying without having to explain to anyone in person.
