Many believers carry a quiet assumption that their job is where they earn money so that the real work can happen in the evenings and on Sundays. It is worth examining, because Scripture does not divide life that way.

Are some jobs more spiritual

The New Testament addresses slaves, soldiers, tax collectors and traders without telling them to change occupation in order to be serious about faith. Paul made tents. The command is to work as for the Lord, which is applied to ordinary labour rather than to religious work.

Farming, coding, nursing and accounting are not the price of admission to the spiritual life; they are part of it. A society needs its food grown and its buildings safe, and doing that honestly is service whether or not anyone calls it ministry.

Ethical pressure

Most working Christians face this before they face any grand question: falsified figures, an expected bribe, an instruction to mislead a customer, pressure to work in a way that damages someone.

Three practical notes. Decide in advance where your line is, because deciding under pressure at the moment of asking usually goes badly. Distinguish what is illegal, what is dishonest, and what is merely uncomfortable. And get counsel from someone who knows your industry rather than only from someone who knows Scripture, since the two together give a better answer than either alone.

Some situations end in leaving a job. That is a real cost and it is not a failure.

Ambition

Ambition is not condemned in Scripture; using people is. Working hard, seeking responsibility and being paid properly are compatible with faith. What is not is treating colleagues as instruments, or letting the job absorb the hours that belong to a family and a congregation.

A simple test: if your work makes you a worse person to live with, its cost is higher than its salary.

Talking about faith at work

Competence first. A colleague who does their job badly has no credibility on anything else, and this is the single most common mistake.

Answer honestly when asked, and be the person who is asked. Do not use authority over someone to press the subject; that is a misuse of position rather than witness.

If work is grim

Some jobs are drudgery taken for the sake of dependants. That is honourable, and Scripture nowhere requires you to find your job fulfilling. Feeding people who depend on you is not a lesser thing.
