John the Baptist — the man who publicly pointed at Jesus and said, behold the Lamb of God — later sent word from prison asking: are you the one who is to come, or should we wait for another? That is the most direct doubt in the Bible, from the person least expected to have it, and it was not edited out. The response was not a rebuke but evidence. Then Thomas, who said he would not believe unless he touched the wounds. Jesus held out his hand. So the first thing: doubt is not desertion. The two get confused, but they point in opposite directions — desertion walks away, doubt stands there and asks for an answer. The second thing: notice which kind of doubt you have. Intellectual doubt is a question you cannot resolve; that one can be read about and asked about, and someone has usually worked on it carefully. Circumstantial doubt arrives with exhaustion, insomnia, long illness, disappointment, a relationship that just broke. That is rarely a new argument; it is depleted energy, and it needs rest and company rather than debate. Practically: say it out loud to a mature believer, because silence lets doubt grow untested. Do not make long-term decisions at the lowest point. And keep doing the small things — gather, read a little, pray. Faith in the low places runs on habit, not feeling. One last thing: doubting while sitting in church does not make you a fraud. A fraud is someone who does not believe and performs it well. That it distresses you is evidence you care whether it is true.
