Depression is a potentially fatal illness, and stopping medication on your own significantly raises the danger, including suicide risk. The person telling them to stop will not carry that consequence; your family member will. Contact their doctor now. If someone says that real faith would make medication unnecessary, notice that nobody applies that logic to other illnesses. No one tells a diabetic to stop insulin or a person with a fracture to remove the cast. Saying it only about mental illness reflects prejudice, not theology. Now the first half. Churches differ here. Most traditions hold that a person belonging to Christ cannot be owned by a demon, because the Spirit dwells in them, while still allowing that a believer may be harassed, oppressed, or influenced. That distinction is worth keeping. More important is discernment. Scripture itself distinguishes: the Gospels record Jesus healing sicknesses and record him casting out demons as separate categories, not two descriptions of one thing. Assigning all suffering to demons erases a distinction the Bible makes. And presence helps far more than diagnosis. What someone in depression most needs is usually not an explanation but someone who stays.
