The most important sentence first: if you are in physical danger now, secure safety before theology. No reading of Scripture requires a person to remain where they are being harmed. That is not in dispute. Now the text. Scripture does hold the marriage covenant in very high regard and says plainly that God hates divorce. That is true and should not be softened. But never permitted is not what Scripture says. At least two situations are addressed. Jesus, teaching on divorce, adds an exception concerning marital unfaithfulness. And Paul handles another case: if the unbelieving partner leaves, let them leave; the brother or sister is not bound in such circumstances. So the position is not never but this is extremely serious and must not be treated lightly. The difference is large: the first traps people inside destruction, the second protects marriage itself. On long-term harm and abuse, Scripture does not write clauses in modern vocabulary, but its whole direction — protect the weak, oppose oppression, husbands love your wives as Christ loved the church — cannot be used to require someone to absorb ongoing injury. Teaching that demands this is using Scripture against Scripture. Practically: get professional help from outside the church; a safety assessment is not spiritual weakness. Find a mature pastor or counsellor willing to hear all the facts, not only someone who will hand you the standard answer. Do not decide alone, and do not be pushed into a decision by people who have heard only one side. Finally: if someone uses God hates divorce to keep you in danger, remember that the context of that line is a rebuke to the one causing the harm, not a demand that the injured party endure.
