What is the gospel?

Christians often talk about "the gospel". What does that word actually mean, and why is it called good news?

Official answer

The word "gospel" simply means "good news". The Bible says God loves the world, but all of us have sinned and are separated from Him (Romans 3:23). The good news is that God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, who died on the cross for our sins and rose again on the third day (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). Everyone who turns from sin and trusts Jesus as Saviour and Lord is forgiven, reconciled to God, and receives eternal life (John 3:16, Romans 10:9-10). This is not something we earn by good works — it is God's free gift of grace (Ephesians 2:8-9). That is the gospel: the best news a person can ever hear.
