What Does the Bible Say About Gratitude?
I know I should be thankful, but it is hard when life is difficult. What does the Bible teach about gratitude?

Gratitude is not merely good manners; it is a life-changing spiritual practice. The Bible treats thankfulness as a mark of God's children and a doorway into joy and peace. Remarkably, gratitude is often not something we feel first and then express. More often, we choose to give thanks, and then our hearts are renewed by it. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 ties three things together: "Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." Notice carefully that the text says to give thanks in all circumstances, not for all circumstances. We do not have to be thankful for suffering itself, but in any situation we can give thanks for the presence, faithfulness, and promises of God. Gratitude is explicitly God's will, not an optional decoration on the Christian life. Psalm 100 is a song of thanksgiving: "Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs... Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name." Notice that thanksgiving is the way we enter God's presence. When we count our blessings, it is as if we push open a door and walk into the nearness of God. Complaint locks that door; gratitude opens it. Psalm 107:1 says, "Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever." The deepest foundation of gratitude is not how favorable our circumstances are, but how good God's character is and how long His love endures. Even when circumstances change, these two things never do. That is why a believer can give thanks in a hospital room or a season of loss, not by pretending everything is fine, but by anchoring the soul to the unchanging goodness of God. Colossians 3:15-17 urges us to be thankful and adds, "whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him." Gratitude is not an occasional mood but a posture that can run through an entire life. Philippians 4:6 places thanksgiving right beside prayer, for gratitude is the very medicine that drives out anxiety. Here is a practical exercise: each night before sleep, write down three things you can thank God for from that day, however small. You will slowly discover that grace was there all along; you simply had not noticed it. May gratitude become the melody of your every day.
