What Does the Bible Say About Anxiety?
I often feel anxious and unsettled. What does the Bible say about anxiety, and how can I find peace?

Anxiety is something every one of us wrestles with. The good news is that the Bible never shames the anxious person. Instead it offers a tender invitation to hand our burdens to a Father who genuinely cares for us. Paul writes in Philippians 4:6-7, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Notice that the command is not simply "stop being anxious." It is "turn to prayer." When we bring each specific worry to God and add thanksgiving, He promises a peace beyond what our reasoning can produce, a peace that stands guard over our hearts like a sentry. Jesus gently reminds His disciples in Matthew 6:25-34 not to worry about their life, what they will eat or drink or wear. Pointing to the birds of the air and the lilies of the field, He asks: if the Father feeds and clothes them, how much more will He care for you? His conclusion is, "Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." Anxiety often grows from our attempt to control tomorrow alone. Faith is the act of handing tomorrow back to the God who is already there waiting for us. Peter gives us a wonderfully practical action in 1 Peter 5:7, "Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you." Psalm 55:22 echoes it, "Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you." God is not asking you to pretend to be strong. He is inviting you to bring your real weakness to Him. In an anxious moment you can do three things. First, pray honestly, naming each concern one by one. Second, give thanks, counting God's past faithfulness. Third, steady your mind with God's Word, such as Isaiah 41:10, "Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God." Peace is not the absence of storms but the presence of the One who calms them.
