The question is therefore not whether to choose family or God. It is which specific acts belong to which category. Christians who take Scripture seriously generally distinguish acts of remembrance and respect from acts of worship and petition. Cleaning a grave, bringing flowers, standing quietly, telling children about their grandparents, sharing a family meal, bowing as a cultural greeting where that is its meaning — these are widely understood as honouring the dead, not worshipping them. Offering food or incense to the ancestors, asking them for protection or blessing, or treating them as able to hear and answer — these are directed to someone other than God. Practically: go, if you can go without doing those specific acts. Presence itself communicates that you have not abandoned your family, and absence is often what the conflict is really about. Tell your family in advance and calmly what you will and will not do. Offer something instead: pay for the meal, drive the elders, clean the grave, arrive early. What relatives usually want is not your incense but your participation in the family.
