Can I lose my salvation?

This is a struggle in the hearts of many who truly love the Lord, and the very fact that you ask this question often shows how much you care about your relationship with God. May His word comfort you: the security of your salvation does not rest on how tightly you hold on, but on how tightly God holds on. The Bible gives us tremendous assurance. Jesus said, "I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand" (John 10:28-29). Notice, it is "eternal life," not temporary life, and it is "no one," which includes even your own weakness. Paul also spoke with full confidence, "He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion" (Philippians 1:6), and that nothing "will be able to separate us from the love of God" (Romans 8:38-39). Why can we be this confident? Because salvation from beginning to end is God's work. It is God who chose you, Christ who died for you, and the Holy Spirit who lives in you as a guarantee (Ephesians 1:13-14). You were not saved by your own good works, so your weakness cannot cancel God's grace either. It is like a child in his father's house who stumbles and makes mistakes, yet is still his father's child. Stumbling is not the same as being thrown out of the family. So what about weakness and falling into sin? When true believers sin, they are not left undisturbed; they are convicted by the Holy Spirit and troubled in their hearts, and this itself is a mark that you belong to God. God has prepared grace for such moments: "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9). The way of forgiveness always stands open. There is one thing to discern. The Bible does warn against "falling away" from the faith, but what it describes is a person who was never truly born again and who finally turns his back on Christ completely, unwilling ever to return (Hebrews 6; 1 John 2:19). This is entirely different from a believer who loves the Lord yet still stumbles and, after stumbling, returns to God. That you grieve over sin and long to be near God itself shows that the Spirit of God is still at work in you. So do not live in the fear of being cast away.
