What Is the Trinity? How Can One God Be Three Persons?

The word "Trinity" is not in the Bible, but it faithfully summarizes the Bible's witness: there is only one God; the Father is God, the Son is God, the Spirit is God; and the Father, Son and Spirit are distinct from one another. The biblical basis: the Old Testament declares "Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one." At Jesus' baptism the Son stands in the water, the Father speaks from heaven, the Spirit descends as a dove — three Persons at once. The Great Commission baptizes in the "name" (singular) "of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." Beware the popular analogies: water's three states (the error of one person switching roles), the sun and its rays (the error of graded, created beings). No analogy fits, because God is without equal. This doctrine is not idle speculation — it carries salvation itself: at the cross the Father gives the Son, the Son lays down His life, the Spirit gives new birth. It also explains why "God is love" can be true: before creation, love already flowed eternally among Father, Son and Spirit. A finite mind cannot exhaust an infinite God. The Trinity is not a contradiction (we never say "one God and three Gods") but a mystery beyond our experience. We need not fully comprehend in order to worship — just as one need not master optics to enjoy sunlight.
