What If My Prayers Are Not Answered
I have prayed about the same thing for two years and nothing has changed. I am starting to wonder whether anyone is listening, or whether I am praying wrongly.

Two years of the same prayer is not a sign that you are doing it wrongly. Some of the longest prayers in Scripture went on for decades, and several are recorded without ever being granted in the form asked. First, what this is not. It is not a technique problem. Prayer is not a formula where the right wording releases the result, and anyone selling you a method has changed prayer into a transaction. It is not necessarily hidden sin. Scripture does say unconfessed wrong can affect prayer, and it is worth honestly checking, but the friends of Job made exactly this assumption about a suffering man, and the book exists partly to say they were wrong. It is not weak faith. Jesus prayed in Gethsemane that the cup would pass, and it did not pass. What may actually be happening: sometimes the answer is no and the reason is not disclosed; sometimes it is not yet, and the waiting itself does something that granting would not; sometimes the request is being answered in a form you did not ask for and have not recognised. None of those is satisfying while you are in it, and saying otherwise would be dishonest. Practical suggestions. Write it down with the date, because memory is a poor record and people who keep a prayer list are frequently surprised years later. Ask two people to pray it with you. Keep saying the true thing: if you are angry or exhausted, pray that, because a third of the Psalms complain. And do not stop. Jesus told a parable about a widow who kept coming back, and the point was persistence.
