Two answers exist among Christians who take Scripture equally seriously, and it is worth saying so plainly rather than pretending the church is united here. One position holds that those God saves he keeps, and that anyone who finally and permanently abandons the faith showed they were never truly in it. The other holds that a person can genuinely turn away and be lost, which is why Scripture warns believers so often. Both are trying to hold the same two sets of verses. What both sides agree on matters more than the disagreement, because it is what actually answers your question. First, repeated failure in the same area is not evidence that you are outside. Paul describes exactly that struggle in the present tense about himself, and the New Testament assumes believers sin and provides for it. Second, the fact that it troubles you is itself significant. People who have genuinely walked away are not tormented by it. Your anxiety is not proof of rejection; it is closer to proof of the opposite. Third, assurance rests on Christ, not on your performance. If your standing depended on your consistency, no one would be safe, including the people telling you that you were never saved. Practically: do not settle this alone at three in the morning. Tell one mature believer the specific thing you keep failing at. Repeated private failure usually stays repeated precisely because it stays private. And notice that the question you are asking is the wrong shape. The useful question is not whether you are still in, but whom you turn to now — and the answer to that one has never changed.
