The short answer is no, you do not have to choose — and Christians who take Scripture seriously already hold several different positions here. Three broad views exist within the church. One, a literal six-day creation with a young earth. Two, that day refers to a longer period, or that Genesis 1 is an ordered framework rather than a timetable. Three, that God created through the process of evolution, often called theistic evolution. All three include people who read carefully and take evidence seriously. So there is no rule that a Christian must hold the first. More useful is to ask first what Genesis 1 is answering. It was written for ancient readers surrounded by creation myths in which the world was born from combat between gods and humans were made to be their slaves. Genesis pushes against exactly that: the world is not fought into being but spoken; sun and moon are not deities but lamps that were made; humans are not slaves but made in the image of God, male and female. Those claims sit on a different level from how long it took. Reading Genesis as a laboratory report is using the wrong instrument on a question it did not set out to answer. Practically: do not assume you must settle this before you can believe — two thousand years without agreement suggests it is not the foundation. Notice who is speaking, because much of the public argument is a culture dispute rather than a textual one. And your honesty in your field is a good thing; you do not need to switch it off to have faith.
