How Can I Know I Am Truly Saved?

The apostle John wrote a whole letter for this: "I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may KNOW that you have eternal life" (1 John 5:13). God wants you assured, not perpetually trembling. Assurance stands on three pillars: 1. God's promises (the objective ground). "Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life"; "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." The basis is not how you feel but whether God keeps His word. The anchor is not on the boat; it grips the rock outside it. 2. A changed life (the observable evidence). First John offers tests: do you love the brothers and sisters? Are you willing to obey His word? Has your attitude to sin changed (you may fall, but you can no longer enjoy it in peace)? These are not conditions of salvation but its fruit — an apple tree does not become one by bearing apples, yet it bears them. 3. The Spirit's witness (the inner seal). "The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God" — the simplest sign being that you truly cry, "Abba, Father." Still doubting? Note the direction of your doubt — unease over your own unworthiness is itself a sign of the Spirit at work (the truly lost do not care). Stop re-converting on every bad week; read 1 John, and move your eyes from yourself to Christ. Faith is a hand: what saves is the gift it grasps — a weak grip does not make the gift less real.
