What Is Heaven Like?

Many people wonder about heaven, often longing to see loved ones again. Scripture does not satisfy every curiosity, but it tells us the most important and most comforting truths: heaven is the dwelling place of God, a holy, glorious, and eternal home. First, the greatest blessing of heaven is being with God face to face. Revelation 21:3 says, "Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God." The heart of heaven is not golden streets but the presence of God. Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 13:12 that now we see "in a mirror dimly, but then face to face." Second, heaven is a place with no more tears, death, or pain. Revelation 21:4 promises, "He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away." Every sickness, sorrow, and parting of this life will be gone forever. Third, heaven is a place of dazzling beauty and holiness. Revelation 21-22 pictures the city with jasper, pure gold, the river of life, and the tree of life. These images, given through the Spirit in human language, let us glimpse a glory beyond imagination. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 2:9, "What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him." Most importantly, heaven is the home Jesus is preparing for those who belong to him. In John 14:2-3 the Lord promises, "In my Father's house are many rooms... I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also." The way into heaven is not by earning merit through good works, but by trusting in Jesus Christ, who died and rose for us (John 14:6). Heaven is also a place of joyful worship among a great multitude "from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages" (Revelation 7:9). We will not be idle or bored; we will serve and reign with Christ (Revelation 22:3-5), fully alive, fully whole, fully at home. Scripture also promises that heaven is not a ghostly, disembodied existence. At Christ's return, our bodies will be raised imperishable and transformed to be like His glorious body (Philippians 3:20-21; 1 Corinthians 15:42-44). Believers who have already died are even now "away from the body and at home with the Lord" (2 Corinthians 5:8), consciously in His presence, awaiting that final resurrection. This is why Paul could say that to depart and be with Christ is "far better" (Philippians 1:23) than anything this world offers.
