马嘴里的嚼环、大船上的舵、森林里的一星火。三个比喻说的是同一件事：一个很小的东西，决定了一个很大的东西的方向。
雅各把它用在说话上，而且一点都没有放软：我们用舌头颂赞神，又用舌头咒诅那照着神形像被造的人——他直接说：这是不应当的。
请留意：他没有给出一套「控制舌头」的技巧。
他把它当成一个症状，然后把注意力引向源头，而不是那条溪流。
