Aaron: Israel's First High Priest and the Mediator Who Atoned for the People

Among the many figures of Scripture, Aaron is a name both honored and deeply human. So God provided Aaron to help him. God told Moses that Aaron would be his mouth, and Moses would be as God to Aaron. Moses' Spokesman Before Pharaoh Aaron became Moses' spokesman, entering Pharaoh's palace again and again to declare the words of the LORD. The next day, Aaron's staff alone had budded — it even blossomed and produced ripe almonds. This dead branch that came to life became the proof that God Himself had chosen Aaron for the priesthood, and it reminds every generation that the priestly office is not something a man seizes for himself, but a grace appointed and given by God. 「And it came to pass, that on the morrow Moses went into the tabernacle of witness; and, behold, the rod of Aaron for the house of Levi was budded, and brought forth buds, and bloomed blossoms, and yielded almonds.Numbers 17:8 (KJV)」 The Golden Calf: A Profound Failure Yet Aaron also fell, and fell deeply. When Moses lingered long upon Mount Sinai and did not come down, the people gathered around Aaron and demanded that he make them a god. Aaron gave in to the crowd, took their gold rings, and cast a golden calf, letting the people worship the idol and give themselves over to revelry. It was a bitter failure, and it shows us that even a priest is nothing more than a sinner in need of grace. God's anger burned because of this, and only through Moses' intercession were the people spared from destruction. Aaron's weakness reminds us that no one can stand by his own strength; we can only look to the mercy of God. The Priesthood and the Tabernacle Despite his failure, God in His grace still appointed Aaron and his sons to carry the office of the priesthood. God prepared glorious holy garments for Aaron: the breastplate, the ephod, the robe, and the golden crown engraved with the words “HOLINESS TO THE LORD.” He served in the tabernacle, offering sacrifices, burning incense, and tending the lamps, day after day bringing the people before God. All of these elaborate rituals proclaimed one truth: if a sinner is to draw near to a holy God, there must be a mediator, there must be a sacrifice, there must be blood shed for atonement. 「And thou shalt anoint them, and consecrate them, and sanctify them, that they may minister unto me in the priest's office.Exodus 28:41 (KJV)」 The High Priest Who Atoned for the People Aaron's most important calling was to enter the Most Holy Place alone on the Day of Atonement each year, carrying the blood of the sacrifice to make atonement for himself and for all the people. He stood between God and man, bearing the people's burden and pleading on their behalf. Yet Aaron himself was also a sinner; his sacrifices were repeated year after year and could never truly take away sin. He did not offer the blood of bulls and goats, but offered up His own body once for all, accomplishing redemption forever. Like Aaron's staff, He budded forth from death and became our hope of resurrection. He is the mediator we may draw near to at any moment, ever living to intercede for us.
