Joseph in Egypt: You Meant Evil, but God Turned It to Great Good

He did not treat it as a small matter between two people; he saw it as a sin against God. He would rather suffer for doing right than buy his life with sin. Imprisoned Though Innocent: God Was Still With Him For his very faithfulness Joseph was falsely accused and cast into prison. Yet Scripture does not linger on his injustice; it declares once more that the LORD was with Joseph and showed him mercy, giving him favor even in prison, so that the keeper entrusted all the prisoners to his charge. The Gift of Interpreting Dreams: Glory to God In prison Joseph interpreted the dreams of the cupbearer and the baker, and years later he unlocked for Pharaoh the strange vision of seven fat cows and seven lean ones. He never boasted in his own cleverness. Humbly he said, the interpretation is not in me, but in God. He revealed that Egypt would face seven years of plenty and seven years of famine, and he offered the wise counsel of storing grain against the coming want, so that Pharaoh and all his officials were astonished. From Dungeon to Governor: God's Reversal Pharaoh saw that the Spirit of God was in him and set Joseph over all the land of Egypt, second only to the throne. The boy rejected by his brothers, framed by his master's wife, and forgotten in prison had become the governor of Egypt. Through the seven years of plenty he gathered grain beyond measure; and when the famine came, people from every land came to buy from him, including his own brothers from distant Canaan, the very ones who had sold him. 「And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Forasmuch as God hath shewed thee all this, there is none so discreet and wise as thou art.Genesis 41:39 (KJV)」 Testing and Reunion: Forgiveness Through Tears The brothers came down to Egypt to buy grain, never recognizing that the governor before them was the very Joseph they had sold. He tested them several times, watching to see whether their hearts had changed. When he saw them willing to sacrifice themselves for their youngest brother, Benjamin, he could hold back no longer. He wept aloud and made himself known to them: ‘I am Joseph your brother, whom ye sold into Egypt.’ In that moment there was no settling of old scores, no revenge, only embrace and reconciliation. ‘God Meant It for Good’ Joseph comforted his trembling brothers with the very heart of the whole story. He never saw himself as a victim of fate, but as an instrument in God's hand. The evil of men had become the channel of God's rescue.
