In All Things God Works for the Good of Those Who Love Him (Romans 8:28)

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28). This verse is often misread, as though it said that every single thing that happens is good in itself. But that is not what Paul says. He does not say every event is good; he says that God is able to work all things — including the painful, the broken, the unjust — together for good in the end. The key phrase is works together. Taken alone, many things offer no good at all: illness, lost work, betrayal, the death of someone we love. But God is like a master weaver, taking threads that seem unrelated and even contradictory and weaving them into a picture we cannot yet see in full. Joseph said to the brothers who had sold him into slavery, “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good.” One event, two intentions — and God's intention finally wins. Notice also the scope of the promise. It is not an unconditional guarantee to everyone, but a promise to “those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” This is not about earning the right to it first; it describes a relationship. When we entrust our lives to this God who is both good and sovereign, we can be sure that He will not waste a single thing we go through — not even our tears. Today you may be in a season where the “good” is nowhere in sight. This verse does not ask you to pretend the wound does not hurt. It invites you to believe that this is not the end of the story. What you see now is a tangle of loose threads; what God sees is the finished picture. You can place the part you do not understand into His hands and rest there for now. Father, there are things I still do not understand, and I cannot see the good in them. Help me to trust You — that You can work all things together for good. While I wait, let me rest in Your goodness. Amen.
