A Time for Everything — Ecclesiastes 3:1

"There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens." (Ecclesiastes 3:1) The Preacher then lists a series of contrasts: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance. The lines are honest, and they land with a certain weight, because they admit what we would rather deny: life is not a straight line that only climbs upward. It moves in rhythms and seasons. We cannot set every day to the same weather. Most of us want to hold on to one particular season. When the harvest is in, we wish it would never end. When the darkness falls, we are sure it will never lift. But the Preacher reminds us that seasons turn. This is both a warning and a comfort. The warning: do not sink your roots into what will pass. The comfort: the pain you are carrying right now does not get the last word either. There is a time to weep, yes, but also a time to laugh. There is something deeper still in verse 11: "He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart." That ache inside us for something that lasts is a signpost. We were made for a God who stands above time. No wonder no single season can fully satisfy us; we were created to rest in the Lord who holds every season in his hands. So we do not have to pretend we are in control, and we do not have to panic when we cannot see the whole picture. There is a God who knows the times. He is with you when you laugh, and he is with you when you weep. Your task today is not to arrange every season perfectly, but to place each one into his hands, trusting that he can make it "beautiful in its time." Whatever season you are in, it is not wasted. The God who set eternity in your heart is writing a story longer than this chapter. Hold the season loosely, and hold him tightly. Lord, I give you the seasons of my life.
