The Prophet Who Asked for a Double Portion: The Everyday Miracles of Elisha

Yet the prophet told her to borrow empty vessels from all her neighbors, shut the door behind her, and pour out the oil. Miraculously the oil kept flowing, filling every borrowed vessel until there was not one left. After she sold the oil and paid off her debt, she and her sons could live on what remained. God begins with the little we have left and brings about provision beyond anything we could imagine. He watches over the orphan and the widow, and He hears the silent cries of those in distress. Raising the Shunammite Woman's Son There was a wealthy woman in Shunem who often invited Elisha to eat, and she even built a small upper room for him against the wall. To reward her hospitality, God gave this childless woman a son through the prophet. But when the child had grown, he suddenly cried out with a pain in his head, sat on his mother's lap until noon, and then died. The woman did not weep or wail. She rode straight off on her donkey to Mount Carmel to find the prophet. Elisha came to the child's bed and prayed earnestly, stretching himself out upon the boy. Little by little the child's body grew warm, until at last he sneezed seven times and opened his eyes. Where death seemed final, God still had the power to bring life again, and He tended to the broken heart of a mother. Healing Naaman's Leprosy Naaman, the commander of the king of Syria's army, was a man of great victories yet stricken with leprosy. A captive Israelite girl told him that a prophet in Samaria could heal him. Naaman came from afar bearing gifts of silver and gold, but Elisha only sent a messenger out to tell him to go and wash seven times in the Jordan. 「Then went he down, and dipped himself seven times in Jordan, according to the saying of the man of God: and his flesh came again like unto the flesh of a little child, and he was clean.2 Kings 5:14 (KJV)」 At first Naaman thought the Jordan too ordinary and nearly stormed off in anger, until his servants urged him to lay aside his pride and give it a try. God's grace so often comes to those willing to humble themselves and obey, caring not how impressive the method may be, but only whether we are willing to surrender. The Axe Head That Floated The company of prophets was cutting down trees by the Jordan to build a place to live, when one man's axe head slipped off and fell into the water. He cried out, Alas, master! for it was borrowed. What others might have counted a trivial matter, the prophet took seriously. Elisha cut off a stick and threw it into the water, and the sunken iron axe head rose to the surface. God does not only work great miracles that save nations; He also stoops to attend to a single borrowed farm tool. There is no small worry of yours that He cannot see or will not heed. Miracles and Mercy in the Everyday Looking across Elisha's whole life, most of his miracles took place not in palaces or royal courts, but in kitchens, at sickbeds, by riverbanks, and out in the fields.
