Peace I Leave With You — John 14:27

"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." (John 14:27) Jesus spoke these words on the night before he was betrayed and crucified. The room was full of unease; the disciples' hearts were being churned by fear. In that very moment, the Lord did not say to them, "Don't worry, everything will work out fine." Instead, he left them a gift: his own peace. Notice how Jesus describes this peace: "not as the world gives." The world's peace is conditional, supplied by circumstances. It depends on the bill being paid, the test results coming back clear, the relationship being repaired. That kind of peace rises and falls with the headlines and vanishes at the first sign of trouble. But the peace of Christ is not built on calm circumstances; it is built on his own presence and his victory. That is why it can remain even while the storm still rages. Jesus then gives two commands: "Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." That almost sounds impossible, as if worry were something we could simply switch off. But the Lord can command it because he is giving us the very source of his peace. He is not asking us to grit our teeth and suppress our feelings; he is inviting us to turn the weight of our hearts toward the One who can still a storm with a word. Peace is not a thing we manufacture; it is a Person we trust. Today, perhaps your heart is troubled about something. Bring it to Jesus. You do not need to pretend it is not there. Then receive the gift he leaves: a peace that surpasses understanding. It may not change your situation instantly, but it will guard your heart and mind. It stations itself like a sentry over the very place where fear used to march in. The world can only offer you distraction from your fears. Christ offers you himself, and in himself, a peace no circumstance can take away. Lord, I hand you the things that trouble me.
