Love Your Neighbor as Yourself — Mark 12:31

"The second is this: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no commandment greater than these." (Mark 12:31) A teacher of the law asked Jesus which commandment was the greatest. Jesus first answered: love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. Then he added "the second": love your neighbor as yourself. These two cannot be separated. A heart that loves God will inevitably flow out toward people, and love for people that is real will always be rooted in love for God. Whoever claims to love the God he cannot see while refusing to love the brother he can see, Scripture says, is deceiving himself. Notice the measuring rod: "as yourself." We all know very well how to love ourselves. We make room for our own weaknesses, give ourselves a second chance, think first of our own needs. Jesus says: take that same attentiveness and turn it toward the person next to you. This is not primarily about summoning a warm feeling; it is about concrete action, patience, understanding, forgiveness, a hand held out. Love is not first an emotion but a choice, the choice to hold another person's good in your heart. Who is my "neighbor"? In Luke's Gospel, Jesus answers with the parable of the Good Samaritan: your neighbor is the person in need who is right in front of you, even if he is different from you, even if he is someone you once looked down on. Loving your neighbor as yourself usually does not happen in some distant grand plan. It happens in today's conversation, today's phone call, today's decision to be gracious. We have no power to live out this kind of love on our own. But the Lord who commands us to love has first loved us, even to the point of laying down his life. Our love is drawn from his love. Come to him first and be filled, and then you will have something to pour out for others. Start small and start today. One patient word, one act of kindness, one refusal to keep score. This is how the greatest commandment takes flesh in an ordinary life. Lord, you loved me first. Fill me with your love, so that today I can truly love the people around me. Amen.
