Nothing Can Separate Us (Romans 8:38-39)

"For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 8:38-39) Listen to the settled certainty in Paul's words. He does not say "I hope" or "I suppose." He says "I am convinced." Then he lists a long parade of enemies fearsome enough to shake anyone: death, the hardships of life, unseen spiritual powers, the unknown future, heights and depths. One by one he declares that none of them can separate us from the love of God. We often imagine that God's love behaves like the weather, brightening and darkening according to our performance. Obey today and the sun comes out. Stumble today and the clouds roll in. But the love Paul describes here does not rest on our performance. It rests on "Christ Jesus our Lord." Because this love is "in Christ," nothing can separate you from it unless someone could first pull you out of Christ, and no created thing has that power. Notice how far Paul reaches to gather up every possible threat. He grasps at time, both present and future, so that no season of your life falls outside God's love. He grasps at height and depth, so that no matter how high your fears rise or how low your failures sink, they cannot reach the place where God's love ends, because it has no end. He even adds "anything else in all creation," sweeping up whatever he may have forgotten. The list is meant to leave you with nothing left to fear. You may feel unworthy of love today. You may want to hide from God because of weakness, failure, or shame. But hear this clearly: your failure cannot make God love you less, because His love was never something you earned. It is as steady as a rock, for it is anchored in the finished work of Christ. The question is not whether you can hold on to God tightly enough. The question is whether anything can loosen His grip on you, and Paul answers with a resounding no. Prayer: Father, thank You that Your love in Christ can never change and never be broken.
