Hope as an Anchor for the Soul — Hebrews 6:19

"We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain." (Hebrews 6:19) The writer reaches for a picture from the sea. A ship on the water may be tossed about by wind and waves, but once the anchor dropped from its hull grips something solid on the seabed, the ship still moves and yet does not drift away, does not smash on the rocks and sink. Christian hope, the writer says, is an anchor just like that, "firm and secure." The waves may still heave, but we are not swept away. But here is a beautiful twist. An ordinary anchor reaches down to grip the seabed. This anchor of hope reaches up, entering "the inner sanctuary behind the curtain," the heavenly Most Holy Place where Jesus has already gone ahead of us as our forerunner. In other words, the anchor of our hope is not thrown into our shifting circumstances here below; it is thrown up into the unshakable Christ above. Our security does not rest on how tightly we hold on, but on how firmly the One behind the curtain holds us. This is why Christian hope is so different from the wishful thinking the world calls hope. The world's hope is a vague expectation: I hope tomorrow is better, I hope things work out. Christian hope is a certainty, because it is tied to the promise of God, and "it is impossible for God to lie" (Hebrews 6:18). This hope is not built on circumstances but on the Savior who gave his life for us and has entered the presence of the Father on our behalf. Today, perhaps you feel tossed about by the waves: uncertainty, worry, weariness. Remember that your anchor is not on this heaving surface. It is fixed firmly in heaven. The storm cannot tear it loose, because the one holding it is Christ himself. An anchor does not stop the storm; it holds you steady through it. You may feel the pitch and roll of hard days, but you will not be lost, because your hope is fastened to the throne of God. Lord, when I am shaken, be the anchor of my soul.
