David Spares Saul Twice: Leaving Vengeance in God's Hands

The Chance in the Cave: Only a Corner of the Robe In the wilderness of En Gedi, Saul went alone into a cave to relieve himself, never realizing that David and his men were hidden deep inside. His men whispered, 「This is your moment!」 But David only quietly cut off a corner of Saul's robe, and even then his heart smote him, for he felt he had wronged the king by so much as that. 「Wherefore hearest thou men's words, saying, Behold, David seeketh thy hurt? Behold, this day thine eyes have seen how that the LORD had delivered thee to day into mine hand in the cave: and some bade me kill thee: but mine eye spared thee.1 Samuel 24:9-10 (KJV)」 'I Dared Not Stretch Out My Hand Against the Lord's Anointed' David lifted up that piece of cloth and called out to Saul, holding it up as proof: I could have killed you, and I did not. Abishai said, 「God has delivered your enemy into your hand; let me pin him to the ground with one thrust.」 Once more David stopped him, taking only the spear and the water jug from beside Saul's head, and not one man in the whole camp knew, for the Lord had made them fall into a deep sleep. Leaving the Judgment to God David was convinced that whoever raised his hand against the anointed would bear the guilt. He would rather wait than seize with bloody hands the throne God had promised to give him. He calmly entrusted the whole outcome to the righteous Judge. 「The LORD forbid that I should stretch forth mine hand against the LORD's anointed... but I would not stretch forth mine hand against the LORD's anointed.1 Samuel 26:11, 23 (KJV)」 Waiting on God's Timing Rather Than Avenging Oneself It was not that David lacked the power to take revenge; he chose instead to trust God's timing. He understood that what belongs to God must be brought about by God Himself, and that God's justice must be vindicated by God alone. Today, when we are misunderstood or wronged and the chance to retaliate seems within reach, David's example reminds us to hand authority back to God and wait for the Lord who searches every heart. For Us Today David's twofold mercy was not weakness but a deeper kind of strength, the strength of a heart governed by God. May we too learn not to rush to defend ourselves when wounded, nor to seize the chance for revenge when we hold the upper hand, but to wait quietly for God's timing.
