Living Water (John 4:14)

"But whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life." (John 4:14) Jesus spoke these words to a Samaritan woman who had come alone to draw water in the heat of midday. She chose the hour when no one else would be at the well, most likely to avoid the eyes of the crowd, for her life was full of brokenness and shame. Yet Jesus was waiting for her at that very well, and He pointed her to a kind of water she had never tasted. Well water is good, but you drink it and grow thirsty again. So it is with many of the things we chase after in life: achievement, relationships, wealth, the approval of others. They can quench our thirst for a moment, but before long the deep thirst returns. Jesus was speaking about that deeper thirst, the thirst of the soul. The living water He gives is not something you must draw again and again from the outside. It becomes "in them a spring of water," a life that flows continually from within, welling up to eternal life. Notice that this living water was not something the woman earned by her own effort. It was something Jesus freely gave. Your weary and thirsty heart today does not need to be filled by chasing harder after the things that never satisfy. It needs only to come to Jesus and receive from Him the water of life He offers. He is never weary of thirsty people coming to Him. In fact, He came looking for this woman, and He comes looking for you. Think about how a spring is different from a well. A well is a hole that must be lowered into, and the water sits still until someone hauls it up. A spring rises up on its own, fresh and moving, from a source deep beneath the ground. Jesus does not offer to top us off occasionally like a well. He offers to place a spring inside us, an inner source of life that keeps flowing even when our outward circumstances run dry. Whatever has left you empty today, hear the invitation of Jesus. Come and drink. The One who met a broken woman at a well and gave her living water is offering the same to you, freely and fully. Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are the spring of living water. Only You can satisfy the deep thirst of my soul. Give me Your living water today, welling up within me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
