Be Still and Know That I Am God (Psalm 46:10)

He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth” (Psalm 46:10). It is easy to picture this verse whispered on a quiet morning, but its setting is anything but calm. Psalm 46 speaks of mountains falling into the heart of the sea, of waters roaring and foaming, of nations in uproar and kingdoms tottering. Into that turmoil God speaks a single, steadying command: be still. To be still is not merely to stop moving. The Hebrew word carries the sense of letting go, of relaxing your grip, of ceasing your frantic effort to hold everything together. God is inviting us to release the controls we were never strong enough to hold in the first place. Behind the command lies a promise: know that I am God. Our stillness is not empty; it is filled with the knowledge that Someone greater than our circumstances reigns over them. Notice that God does not say, “Be still and figure it out,” or “Be still and try harder.” He says, “Be still, and know that I am God.” The stillness comes first, and out of it grows a deeper knowing — not just information about God, but a settled trust that He is who He says He is. When the news is loud and your heart is racing, the invitation is the same as it was for ancient Israel: stop striving, and remember who holds the world. Today this may look small and ordinary. Before you reach for your phone, take a slow breath and remember that God is God and you are not. When worry tempts you to solve everything at once, name one thing you can release into His hands. Stillness is not passivity; it is the active trust that lets God be God while you rest in His care. You may have to return to this stillness many times before noon, and that is not failure but faith practiced in real time — each return is a small act of surrender. The world may shake, and the headlines may keep shaking it, but the One who spoke over the storm still says, “Be still,” and His voice has not lost its power. Father, quiet my restless heart.
