Most people who have never been to a service are held back by practical worries rather than by belief. They are afraid of doing the wrong thing in front of a room full of people who know what they are doing. Here is what actually happens.

What to wear

Whatever you would wear to meet a friend for lunch. In most congregations today you will see everything from suits to jeans. If you are visiting a cathedral, an Orthodox church or a congregation of older people, lean slightly smarter. Nobody has ever been turned away for clothing.

When to arrive

Five to ten minutes early is ideal. You get a seat you chose rather than one that is left, and someone at the door has time to answer a question. Sit toward the middle or back for a first visit; standing and sitting at the right moments is easier when you can see what others do.

The usual order

Most services run about an hour to ninety minutes, and follow a recognisable shape: singing, prayer, a Bible reading, a sermon of twenty to forty minutes explaining that passage, more singing, and a closing prayer or blessing. Some traditions include a written confession and creed, and communion weekly or monthly.

The offering

A bag, plate or basket may be passed along the row. Visitors are not expected to give. Pass it on. Nobody is watching, and giving is understood as something members do as part of belonging, not an entry fee.

Communion

If bread and wine are shared, practice differs. Many churches invite any baptised believer; some invite only members of that church or tradition. Whoever leads it will normally say. If you are unsure or not yet a believer, staying seated is completely normal and entirely respectable.

Afterwards

This is the part that decides whether you return. Stay for ten minutes. Say to one person that it is your first visit. That single sentence does more than the whole service to make a second visit likely, because it turns you from an observer into someone the congregation knows arrived.
