An Introduction to the Letter to the Hebrews Hebrews is one of the most profound and majestic letters in the New Testament. The letter was written to a group of Jewish Christians under great pressure. The author writes to prove to them that going back to the shadows means leaving the reality behind, because Jesus is the fulfillment of everything those shadows pointed to. Most scholars believe Hebrews was written in the 60s A.D., before the destruction of the Jerusalem temple in A.D. 70. Structure and Message: Jesus Is Better The heart of Hebrews can be summed up in a single word: "better." Step by step, the author announces the supremacy of Christ. Jesus is better than the angels (Hebrews 1). He is the exact imprint of God's nature, upholding the universe by the word of His power. Jesus is better than Moses (Hebrews 3). Moses was faithful as a servant in God's house, but Christ is faithful as the Son over the house. Jesus is a better High Priest (Hebrews 4:14-7). He is a priest in the order of Melchizedek, who lives forever and always intercedes for us. Jesus offers a better sacrifice (Hebrews 9-10). The old priests offered the blood of bulls and goats day after day, yet it could never take away sins. Christ, however, "by a single offering... has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified" (Hebrews 10:14). Because of this, we can "with confidence draw near to the throne of grace" (Hebrews 4:16), for we have a High Priest who sympathizes with our weaknesses. This is the pastoral heart of the letter: the greatness of Jesus is not distant or cold, but the very reason we can come near to God without fear. A Call to Faith and Endurance Hebrews is not only rich in doctrine; it is full of encouragement and warning. Chapter 11 is the famous "hall of faith," recounting how Abel, Noah, Abraham, Moses, and many others lived by trusting God's promises even when they could not yet see the fulfillment. Then the author draws the conclusion: "Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith" (Hebrews 12:1-2). This is the summit of the whole book and its great encouragement to every follower of Christ: however hard the road, keep looking to Jesus, and run all the way to the finish line. The many warnings scattered through the letter, urging readers not to drift, harden their hearts, or shrink back, all serve this same goal of perseverance.
