Online services began as an emergency measure and became permanent. For some people they are a convenience. For others — the housebound, the night-shift worker, the believer in a country where gathering is dangerous, the person whose nearest congregation speaks a language they do not — they are the only option there is.

Where to look

Start with churches you already have a reason to trust: one you used to attend, one a friend belongs to, one recommended by someone whose judgement you know. A stream from a congregation connected to your actual life is worth more than a polished production by strangers.

If you have no such link, work outward from denomination. Find a tradition whose teaching you can place, then look for congregations within it that publish services. Many listings in our church directory include a website where a livestream, if there is one, will be announced.

How to tell a good stream from a bad one

Look for a real congregation on the other end. If you never see the room, never hear anyone but the speaker, and there is no way to contact a person, you are watching a broadcast, not visiting a church.

Look for teaching that walks through Scripture rather than around it. Look for prayer that names real situations. Be wary of anything that spends more time on giving than on the text, and of any stream whose most prominent feature is one personality.

The honest answer about whether it counts

Watching a service is genuinely worth doing. You hear Scripture taught, you sing, you pray, and none of that is nothing.

But the New Testament word for church describes people assembled — being known, being needed, being missed when absent. A screen delivers the teaching and withholds everything else. It cannot bring you a meal, sit with you in a hospital corridor, or notice that you have not been around.

So treat online worship as a real good and a partial one. If you can gather in person, gather, and use streams for the weeks you cannot. If you truly cannot, use streams fully — and look for one live connection alongside them, even a weekly call with two other believers. You can ask here whether anyone gathers near you; sometimes the answer is yes and no dataset knew it.
